BEING SEXUAL

53. Behaving Sexually

To discuss some sexual situations and behaviours; to practise alternative behaviours; and to validate appropriate sexual behaviours.

A large clear space; a table and chairs; a copy of the situation(s) you intend to use (see next pages); and video equipment if you have it.

Decide which of the sample situations given here are appropriate for your group. If none of them are, then write your own in similar style.

Read the scenario to the group, and give them time to reflect on it. You may need to read it a second time. Ask them the questions which follow each situation, giving time for discussion on each one.

It may be important after discussion of each question to make a clear statement about whether the behaviour was right or wrong. This will depend on the ability and maturity of the group.

When the group has suggested a positive alternative way the person could have behaved, then act out the role-play, using the alternative behaviour. Discuss whether this was more effective. If you have video equipment, film them and play it back.

Read the male version of the situation to the boys/men in the group and have them discuss it; and read the female version to the girls/women and have them discuss it. Then bring the two groups back together to share their responses to it.
