COMMUNICATION

7. Introductions

To practise informal meetings and greetings and to learn appropriate behaviour.

A large clear space; a circle of chairs; a selection of drawings from Picture Yourself 2 - Meeting and Greeting; and video equipment if you have it.

Talk with the group about meeting family and friends, and how you greet them. Ask for a couple of volunteers to demonstrate an appropriate way of greeting a friend. Discuss with the group whether their behaviour was appropriate. If not, discuss alternatives.

Get the group into pairs to practise and demonstrate in turn to the group. When they are ready move on to other situations, eg:

meeting your sister unexpectedly in the street
introducing two friends who have not met before
meeting an uncle and aunt off the train
meeting your best friend after the holidays
If you have video equipment it will be useful to film these role-plays and play them back to the group, so that they can comment on their behaviour.
